After the war and a brief stint in an architect’s office, a 20-year-old Hamilton moved to Paris, the epicenter of art and culture. He quickly found work in the fashion industry as a graphic designer for Peter Knapp at Elle magazine. He was later hired away by Queen magazine as an art director, but his love for the French capital pulled him back. Upon returning, he became the art director for Printemps, the largest department store in Paris. It was during this period that Hamilton began moonlighting as a photographer, and his dreamy, grainy style immediately caught the eye of major publications like Réalités , Twen , and Photo , launching his career as a professional photographer.

Despite—or perhaps because of—the controversy, Hamilton achieved phenomenal commercial success.
