At its core, the Broadcom BCM3392 is a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem SoC. However, to view it merely as another modem chip would be to miss its profound strategic importance. It is a "speedier" evolution of its predecessor, the widely deployed BCM3390. While the BCM3390 was a powerful chip that helped define the first generation of DOCSIS 3.1, it was limited to two Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) downstream channels. The BCM3392 doubles down on this specification.
According to reporting from Light Reading, the chip was sampled in 2023, passed certification in 2024, and is currently in production, with major CPE vendors already building gateways around it. Deployment and Ecosystem (2025-2026) broadcom 3392
