The show’s supporting world is equally important. Mike shares a one‑bedroom apartment, often visits his cantankerous, divorced mother Peggy (Rondi Reed), and regularly grabs breakfast with his police partner and best friend, Carl McMillan (Reno Wilson), at Abe’s Diner, where their Senegalese waiter Samuel (Nyambi Nyambi) never misses an opportunity to joke about Mike’s weight. Molly, meanwhile, lives in the Chicago home owned by her widowed mother Joyce (Swoosie Kurtz), alongside her younger sister Victoria (Katy Mixon), a free‑spirited waitress with a sharp tongue.
