The film tells the story of Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck), a brooding and introverted man who works as a handyman in Boston. Lee's life is turned upside down when he receives news of his brother Joe's (Kyle Chandler) death. Lee returns to his hometown of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, to care for his teenage nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges), who is struggling to come to terms with his father's death.

In a lesser film, Patrick would just be a plot device. But Hedges portrays Patrick as a realistic, hormonal teenager who is trying to keep his life together—juggling hockey, his band, and two girlfriends—while quietly falling apart inside.
