macOS handles smartcards via the pcscd daemon. You can verify that the OS recognizes both the reader and your inserted card by opening the app and typing: pcsctest Use code with caution.

The reader itself is just a bridge; your computer needs "middleware" to understand the data on the specific card you are using. For example, if you are using a Department of Defense (DoD) CAC card or a national ID, you will need software like ActivClient or OpenSC.
