A fierce rivalry quickly developed, rooted in a dispute over one of Oniani's close associates, and it soon escalated into a full-scale criminal war. Oniani's ambition was audacious: he wanted to "de-crown," or strip the status of "thief-in-law" from Yaponchik, a direct challenge to the underworld's established order.
