What made Significant Mother work was its willingness to be completely ridiculous. It took an incredibly uncomfortable premise and played it for maximum laughs without making it feel overly mean-spirited.

Rounding out the main cast is sitcom veteran Jonathan Silverman as Nate’s father, Harrison. Harrison is desperate to win Lydia back and is utterly oblivious to social cues. His attempts to use Nate to spy on Lydia and Jimmy add an extra layer of generational comedy to the mix. Silverman’s impeccable comedic timing provides some of the season's biggest laughs. The dialogue zips along at Gilmore Girls speed, filled with pop culture references and rapid-fire jokes. The show knows exactly how weird it is. In one episode, Nate literally builds a "sex board" to track where his mom and Jimmy have been intimate in the house. It’s absurd, but the writing commits to the bit 100%.
