The first Shogun was Minamoto no Yoritomo, who established the Kamakura Shogunate in 1192, marking the beginning of warrior rule in Japan. The Kamakura period (1185–1333) was followed by the Muromachi period (1336–1573), during which the Ashikaga Shoguns ruled. The most famous and powerful of the Shoguns was Tokugawa Ieyasu, who founded the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1603, which lasted until the Meiji Restoration in 1867.
