The series' first season is primarily based on the second novel of the original Shannara trilogy, (published in 1982), skipping the first book to start with a storyline that better fit television. The plot follows a young Elven princess, Amberle Elessedil (Poppy Drayton), who is chosen to guard the Ellcrys, a magical tree that holds the world's demons at bay in a realm known as the Forbidding. When the tree begins to die, the demons begin to escape. Amberle must team up with the last descendant of the Shannara family, a half-Elf named Wil Ohmsford (Austin Butler), and a quick-witted human rover named Eretria (Ivana Baquero). Together, with the guidance of the last druid, Allanon (Manu Bennett), they embark on a perilous quest to save the Ellcrys and prevent the destruction of the Four Lands.
